SVG vs. DXF: Which File Does Your Laser Cutting Project Need?

By Monk Vector Works · October 16, 2026 · 3 min

About the team behind this guide

SVG and DXF both store vector geometry, but they are not interchangeable in every laser workflow. The right choice is whichever format the machine operator can import with correct scale and operation mapping.

Where SVG is useful

SVG is well suited to many 2D vector graphics workflows and can retain paths and groups. However, SVG may include masks, filters, text objects or strokes that a laser control application handles inconsistently. Convert and inspect the geometry according to the operator's requirements.

Where DXF is useful

DXF is widely used in CAD-oriented manufacturing handoffs. It can carry lines, polylines and other entities, but compatible DXF versions and supported object types vary. An export may change how curves, units or closed paths are interpreted.

The real issue is geometry

A closed outline matters more than the filename extension for many cutting jobs. Duplicate paths, open endpoints, hidden objects, intersections and microscopic details can cause repeated cutting or failures. The file should include only the entities the operator intends to process.

Confirm scale and operations

Ask whether the supplier expects millimeters or inches, whether colors or layers define cut versus engrave, and what their import settings require. A test square or known dimension can reveal scaling errors before expensive material is cut.

Request the operator's template

A provider's approved template is more reliable than a generic internet preset. Match its page size, origin, stroke rules and nesting preferences. Ask about minimum bridges and material limitations rather than promising that any detailed vector will cut successfully.

How to order file cleanup

Supply the existing SVG, DXF, PDF or source image and the manufacturer's rules. Monk can assess paths, redraw artwork and quote compatible exports. Physical test cutting remains the production provider's responsibility.

Need a cleaner cutting file?

If a cutting file has open paths, duplicated lines or scale errors, share it with your operator's import requirements. See cutting artwork services or request a review.
