How to Prepare Artwork for Laser Cutting and Engraving

About the team behind this guideA file that looks correct on the screen may still contain open paths, duplicated outlines or details that cannot be cut. Successful preparation starts with the material, machine and supplier instructions.
Identify cutting versus engraving
Cutting follows vector paths; engraving may use lines, fills or raster processing depending on the provider. Ask how their software identifies operations, for example by layers, line colors, stroke styles or power settings. Never assume a color code is universal.
Clean the actual geometry
Inspect for duplicate lines that cause repeated passes, disconnected endpoints, unintentional overlaps, extra nodes and paths that are not closed where closure is required. Remove unnecessary clipping objects and make sure the geometry has a meaningful scale.
Use the format the machine operator requested
SVG, DXF, PDF or AI may be accepted, but support varies by control software and import settings. Preserve units and actual dimensions. Ask the supplier which version of DXF or SVG they require and whether strokes, fills or converted outlines are preferable.
Check fine details and kerf
Very narrow bridges, small counters and delicate text may fail physically even when paths are valid. Material thickness, kerf and minimum spacing are production-specific; the cutter must confirm real tolerances. For engravings, tonal artwork may need a different treatment than one-color line art.
Test the handoff
Provide a simple preview showing cut and engrave operations separately. Have the operator confirm scale and operation mapping before cutting paid material. A technical file can be checked for clean paths without implying that the result was tested on a specific laser.
What Monk can do
We can redraw customer artwork into cleaner controlled vector geometry and prepare requested SVG/DXF/PDF deliverables when the supplied specifications make the task viable.
Request cut-ready vector artwork
Have an SVG or DXF with messy paths, or only a raster reference? Share the source and your operator’s import rules. Explore cutting and engraving artwork services or send a project for review.
From guidance to your project
We rebuild and prepare vector artwork for workflows that require clean paths, defined geometry and production-specific file organization.
