Screen Printing Color Separations: Outsource or Prepare In-House?

By Monk Vector Works · October 16, 2026 · 7 min

About the team behind this guide

When a shop receives complicated customer artwork, the question is not simply whether Photoshop can separate it. The real question is whether your team has the time, specifications and experience to prepare separations for the press setup you actually use.

Outsourcing can help with complex jobs or production peaks, but an external separator still needs accurate information from the printer.

What are color separations for screen printing?

Color separation organizes artwork into the components used to create the required print screens. The exact approach depends on the design, ink system, substrate, screens, press and production workflow.

  • Spot color: individual ink colors or simplified graphic elements are prepared for dedicated screens.
  • Simulated process: tonal artwork may be represented using carefully planned spot inks and halftone patterns.
  • CMYK process: conventional process color separation may suit certain workflows, but it is not interchangeable with every simulated-process setup.
  • White underbase: printing on dark garments can introduce additional artwork requirements; the printer must define the underbase approach.

Neither a fixed number of screens nor a universal halftone frequency can be specified responsibly without the equipment and artwork requirements.

When to keep separations in-house

An internal artist may be the best choice if your shop regularly handles the same print methods, already has a dependable proofing process and can prepare artwork without disrupting production. Keeping the task in-house can also streamline changes when the customer revises a design late in the process.

When an outside specialist may help

Consider external assistance when the production queue is overloaded, a complex tonal illustration goes beyond routine spot-color work, or your team needs an additional resource for a defined batch. Outsourcing also lets shops test support without immediately expanding headcount.

Compare more than price per separation. Evaluate how the supplier gathers specifications, the clarity of the handoff and how revisions will be handled.

What to send before requesting a separation quote

  1. The best available editable artwork or source image.
  2. The intended print dimensions and garment/substrate color.
  3. Ink system, available colors and the intended color strategy.
  4. Screen mesh, halftone frequency and angle requirements when known.
  5. Underbase, trapping or registration guidance supplied by the printer.
  6. Required output formats, approval process and production deadline.

Do not guess missing press parameters. Ask the production lead or supplier to confirm them first.

How to review an external separation

Review registration marks, color organization, layer labeling, fine details and the intended underbase against the agreed proof. A digital preview is not proof of final ink behavior. Physical output remains subject to screens, inks, equipment, material and press setup.

A good external handoff should be understandable to your own production staff. If only the outside operator can decipher the layers, the workflow needs clearer documentation.

Frequently asked questions

What halftone LPI should I use?
It depends on screen mesh, ink, press and artwork requirements. Your printer or production lead should confirm the correct specification.
Does simulated process always need a specific number of screens?
No. The separation strategy and color count depend on the art and press workflow; there is no universal screen count.
Can an external artist guarantee the final printed result?
An external artist can prepare agreed files and proofs, but press performance depends on the print provider's setup and production variables.
