How to Fix Pixelated Artwork for DTF Printing
By Monk Vector Works · October 16, 2026 · 3 min
About the team behind this guideA blurry DTF transfer often starts as a weak source file, but increasing its DPI field does not restore missing detail. Work backward from the intended print size and the provider's workflow.
Identify the source problem
Pixelation occurs when too few source pixels must cover the output size. JPG compression can add halos around type and artwork. Cropping, repeated resizing and screenshots can compound the damage. Examine the original at the actual intended size before assuming a file-format conversion will help.
Separate resolution from transparency
A transparent PNG is not automatically crisp, and a crisp image with a solid white rectangle is not automatically suitable for the intended transfer. Inspect semi-transparent edges, shadow effects and any white details. The printer's RIP may handle white ink and underbase in ways the supplier needs to explain.
Choose the right repair
For logos and defined graphics, manual vector redraw can rebuild clean edges before exporting at the target raster size. For photographic illustrations, targeted retouching or use of a better original may be more realistic than a vector conversion. Avoid indiscriminate sharpening that introduces halos.
Ask the DTF printer for specifications
Confirm finished physical dimensions, accepted file type, transparent-background rules, resolution expectations, color-management assumptions, white-ink behavior and whether a gang-sheet layout is desired. Requirements can differ by transfer provider and process.
Quality control before delivery
Preview the exported file over both light and dark backgrounds, inspect edges and test at intended placement size. Do not promise that a screen preview guarantees final press output; ink, film, adhesive powder, garment and production settings matter.
When to outsource
A shop handling many customer screenshots can delegate defined edge cleanup, redraw and resizing tasks. Send the original, a placement size and printer specs, then request an agreed file-preparation quote.
