Business Support

In-House Production Artist vs. Outsourced Artwork Services

By Monk Vector Works · October 16, 2026 · 3 min

About the team behind this guide

Hiring a full-time production artist and outsourcing prepared artwork solve overlapping but different problems. The best fit depends on how steady the workload is, how quickly decisions must be made and who owns the customer relationship.

When an in-house production artist makes sense

A full-time role can be valuable when the shop needs immediate collaboration, consistent daily work, physical proof inspection or close involvement with press staff. Internal employees can develop a detailed understanding of production equipment and recurring account preferences.

When external support may make sense

A remote partner may be more practical when artwork volume arrives in batches, there are spikes before seasonal deadlines or the internal team needs help with clearly defined file corrections. It can also expand access to particular technical skills without promising instant, unlimited availability.

Understand the real cost comparison

Do not compare a freelancer's price per file with only the salary of an employee. Include onboarding, communication, management, revisions, software, quality control, rush availability and the time saved by internal staff. Neither model is inherently cheaper in every business.

Use a hybrid model

Many shops benefit from keeping customer-facing proof approval and press decisions in-house while sending structured redraw or artwork adaptation tasks outside. The external supplier needs the printer's written file requirements and a clear handoff channel.

What to ask before commissioning support

Request a sample quote for representative jobs, explain approval and revision expectations, define white-label rules and agree how sensitive customer artwork will be handled. Review both turnaround communication and file quality.

Decide based on your queue

If backlog comes from missing customer files, better intake may help more than either staffing model. If it comes from repeated, well-defined corrections, external production capacity could be tested. Monk can discuss a bounded pilot rather than suggesting a blanket staffing replacement.

Assess external artwork support for your shop

For an uneven artwork queue, compare a small trial batch with your internal workflow. Explore ongoing artwork support or discuss scoped capacity.
