What You Need Before Hiring a Packaging Designer

Before hiring a packaging designer, gather the product information, latest supplier template and approved content that must appear on the pack. If the supplier or package structure is not decided yet, say so: concept development and final production artwork may need separate stages.

A good brief lets the designer organize the message without guessing about dimensions, variants or required information.

Start with the real package

Ask the printer or manufacturer for the correct dieline or label dimensions. The template should identify the relevant cut, fold and other production boundaries. A similar box downloaded online is not a reliable substitute for the selected supplier's structure.

Provide the material, intended finishes and any written artwork requirements. Foil, white ink or other special treatments may require separate elements, named according to the supplier's workflow. Do not assume that a visual mockup describes those technical instructions.

Supply content that is ready to approve

Organize the product name, description, quantity, ingredients or specifications, contact information and any other required text. The business should obtain the appropriate regulatory and legal review for its product and markets; graphic design does not establish compliance.

Supply approved barcode artwork or specifications where needed. Confirm the code, size and verification requirements with the relevant provider and production partner. Leave space for variable information such as batch details where the brief requires it.

Map the variants before designing the range

For a hypothetical range of three products in two sizes, there may be six final artwork files even if they share one design direction. List that matrix so the proposal reflects the actual adaptation and approval work.

Separate concept approval from file release

A rendered package can help evaluate the direction, but the flat production file must be checked against the actual template. Confirm who approves the copy, which supplier receives the files and whether a physical or color proof is required before production.

Adobe's PDF export documentation explains options for bleed, marks and output settings. The printer's written specification determines which settings fit your job.

Request packaging or label design

Send your product details, brand assets, supplier template, approved copy, number of variants and deadline. If content or production decisions remain open, identify them so the project can be staged sensibly.

Monk can scope packaging and label design, including the agreed production handoff. Manufacturing and physical packaging supply sit with your selected production partner.
